Pleiades (M45)
Saturday 6th March 2010

After sketching the Pleiades (M45) I decided to try and image it as well. As with the sketch this was a very quick image so does not really do justice to its beauty.

Pleiades (M45)
Saturday 6th March 2010

The Pleiades or M45 is probably my favorite open cluster. This is just a quick sketch of the cluster, in time I am hoping to bring out more detail of the gaseous clouds that surround the main starts.

Orion Nebula (M42)
Sunday 31st January 2010

This is my second attempt at shooting M42.

Waxing gibbous moon
Tuesday 26th January 2010

First shot of the year of the 83% full waxing gibbous moon.

Mirphak
Friday 21st August 2009

This is a sketch of Mirphak which is the alpha star in the Perseus Constellation. Mirphak is the bright object top center of this sketch.

Jupiter
Friday 21st August 2009

Looking southwards and the brightest object in the sky will be Jupiter. I did this sketch and was impressed that through only the binoculars I could see two of Jupiter's moons, Callisto & Ganymede

Cassiopeia
Thursday 20th August 2009

Thought after doing a quick naked eye view of the Plough I would try my hand at another constellation. This one is Cassiopeia.

The Plough (Big Dipper)
Thursday 20th August 2009

A nice clear evening. so I grabbed the sketch kit and headed out. Nothing special about this on. A naked eye view of the Plough constellation rising just above the roof line.

Orion Nebula (M42)
Thursday 29th January 2009

This is my first real sketch. I think next time I will choose an easier target and brush up on the basics before trying something complicated like this. Of course its the M42 in Orion but you would be forgiven for not getting that. Being that it my first sketch I have concentrated on the brightest starts - in time though I hope to improve my skills and create more detailed sketches with accurate colour rendering. I hope in the future to re-visit this target and do it justice!

Moon and Venus conjunction
Thursday 29th January 2009

My first picture of the year and as you can see its a conjunction of the waxing crescent moon and Venus.

Orion constellation
Thursday 20th November 2008

This is my first attempt at a sketch - it has not been produced from a RAW in the field sketch but from a photo I took with my DSLR camera earlier in the year (Jan 08) Being as its my first 'sketch' I have not put any work into the star colours (they are all white, but shouldn't be!) but hopefully as time progresses my experience and skills will grow and this will show in my results.

2 Pictures
Sun Spot
Sunday 30th March 2008

Thought I would experiment using my solar filter just over my new Tamron lens. The difficulty here is the brightness on the object and the fact I was holding the filter so concentrating more on not going blind then lining the shot up. The picture is not very clear but it is possible to just make out a sunspot on the surface (enhanced bottom left section in PS). In reality this spot is many times larger then the earth!!

Tameron lens test
Sunday 24th February 2008

Tried to take the moon with my new Tamron lens at full zoom. There are two pics here both taken at the same time from the same position. The only difference is that one is taken with the flash whilst the other is not.  You can see the difference in zoom - the Picture taken on 17th Feb was at full zoom with my Canon 18-55 lens.
Moon at dusk
Sunday 17th February 2008

At dusk the sky was turning orange and with the moon visible I wanted to try and shoot - think I've managed to get the sky effect but moon has not come out very well, but you get the idea!!.
Day moon
Sunday 17th February 2008

It continues to be clear during the day so tried to shoot the moon with just my Canon DSLR camera, the reason for it looking like it was taken at night is due to the high f/ stop. But I assure you that it was brilliant blue skies.

Saturday 16th February 2008

Still excellent clear skies at the moment so getting out nearly every night. Decided to try shooting with my orange filter attached to the eyepiece.
Green moon
Saturday 16th February 2008

Same as below - but this time took with a slightly higher magnification eyepiece and a green filter.
Day moon
Saturday 16th February 2008

If it's nice and clear then sometimes the moon can be seen during the day. So of course I had to try and take some shots.
Waxing Moon
Tuesday 12th February 2008

Don't know what's going on but that's 3 nights in a row it's been clear. Did some more shooting of the moon, on it's First quarter at 23%. This is probably the best one. Shame about the lens flare

Nearly full moon
Friday 24th August 2008

This is the first decent shot I have been able to take with my Canon DSLR. There is no larger version of the picture, but I think it looks OK as it is.

Saturday 19th May 2007

Was at a friend's wedding, but on the same night Venus was in conjunction with the moon so I had to pop out and shoot it.
Sun surface
Friday 6th April 2007

Same day and another shot - this time though can start to see a little detail on the surface!
Sun
Friday 6th April 2007

Was a lovely Bank Holiday so decided now would be an ideal opportunity to try and shoot the sun.

At dusk the sun was a brilliant reddish disc. I tried to take a shot with Pentax, but don't think the optics could do the justice to the real sight!
Blue moon
Tuesday 27th March 2007

Managed to get out and try my new filters and eyepieces. This was taken using a 32mm eyepiece fitted with a blue filter.

Stages to totality of eclipse
Saturday 3rd March 2007

These pictures are my own account of the lunar eclipse that took place tonight. (The difference between the yellowish and whitish tint is mainly due to me altering the camera's colour balance setting as opposed to the effect of the eclipse!)
1st Moon (enhanced)
Friday 5th January 2007

This is my 1st moon picture again, but this time my friend Eric has run it through some Photoshop filters and it really brings out the surface features. It looks good small but when viewed as a larger image it starts to colourise and develop noise round the edges!
1st Moon
Friday 5th January 2007:

This is my 1st ever attempt at shooting the moon. It was taken just by holding my Pentax M20 up to the 20mm (45x mag) eyepiece with the camera set on Auto picture mode.
